Profile
Ray Atwood, owner and operator of At the Well Tattoo in Thunder Bay, Ontario, brings a distinct artistic vision to the tattoo industry. A graduate of Lakehead University’s Fine Art Program, Ray (he/him) initially focused on painting with oil and acrylic, crafting both representational and abstract mixed media pieces that often explored themes of solitude, impermanence, dwelling, and perception. Over the past six years, he has successfully transitioned his fine art background into a thriving career as a tattooer and illustrator.
At his private studio, At the Well Tattoo, Ray has cultivated a strong reputation for large-scale custom tattoo work and intricate illustrative designs. He is particularly skilled in creating expansive pieces inspired by rich narratives and imagery, including common cultural imagery such as Japanese folklore and Asian deities like dragons, foo dogs, koi, and Ganesh. Ray approaches his work with profound respect and ethical consideration, making a clear distinction between common imagery and traditional cultural tattoo practices like Maori or Sak Yant, which he believes should be exclusively performed by practitioners within those cultures.
Committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive space for all clients, Ray ensures that At the Well Tattoo is a safe environment. Beyond his artistic prowess, he is also dedicated to environmental responsibility, utilizing vegan inks and nearly 99% biodegradable products in his tattooing process.
