Profile
“Calamity Jane” Nemhauser (?-2012) was a Colorado legend who made her mark working at Bert Grimm’s on The Pike in Long Beach during the 1970s. Defying norms, she chose a career in tattooing over cabinetmaking and prided herself on being the sole female tattooer at Bert Grimm’s during her tenure. Nemhauser was an avid tattoo collector and meticulous documenter of her life and work. She held a profound philosophy on tattooing, describing it as “living art” that “breathes” and is “very personal,” filled with “magic” and a “primitive urge” connecting it to ancient cultures. Her legacy lives on through Calamity Jane’s Tattoo in Grand Junction, CO.
