Profile
Charles “Red” Gibbons (1879-1964) was a master tattoo artist with a career spanning over 40 years. He is said to have worked on The Pike in Long Beach at 22 Chestnut Place and other shops even before the legendary Bert Grimm arrived. Early in his career, he worked in Spokane, Washington, before moving to California with his wife, Anna Gibbons (Artoria). Gibbons was known for his dedication to artistic quality, striving to reproduce beautiful artwork rather than just “scratching rough outlines.” His beloved career was tragically cut short after he lost both his eyes in separate accidents.
