Profile
Jill “Horiyuki” Bonny is the esteemed owner and founder of Studio Kazoku in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury District, which she opened in 2017. A revered figure in the tattoo world, she earned the distinguished title “Horiyuki” from Master Horiyoshi III of Yokohama in 2008, a significant recognition as the first non-Japanese woman to receive this honor. Her career began in NYC in 1996, just before the city’s tattoo ban was lifted, following her graduation from The Cooper Union, School of Fine Art. While Studio Kazoku is built upon her deep sensibility and extensive experience with Japanese tattooing, the studio embraces a variety of styles. Beyond her artistry, Horiyuki is an accomplished author, with her writing featured in numerous publications and several books, including ‘Studying Horiyoshi III; A Westerner’s Journey into the Japanese Tattoo.’ She has lectured at prominent institutions such as The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and was a lead advocate for the Unified Tattoo and Body Art Shops of San Francisco during the pandemic, playing a critical role in the reopening of tattooing in the Bay Area.
