Profile
“Painless Al” Alfred Orsini was a prominent tattoo artist who worked at The Pike in Long Beach during the 1960s. He was a co-owner of Expert Tattoo – Long Beach Tattoo Studio, one of the largest shops with “7 Master Tattoo Artists,” located at #362 West Pike, alongside Captain Jim Maloneson and Fred Thornton. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Orsini played a significant role in fostering new talent, notably giving Phil Sims his first job as a tattooer after Sims’ military service. He later moved to San Diego, where he took over one of Bert Grimm’s shops and successfully rebranded it as “The Illustrated Man.”
